Strengthening Pre-service Education for Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical:

The aim of this component is to strengthen pre-service education for nursing, midwifery and paramedical cadres in five government schools in the state. An intensive andcomprehensive assessment, conducted in April-May 2018, found that the schools were only partiallycomplied (30 percent) with Indian Nursing Council (INC) and All Indian Council for TechnicalEducation (AICTE) Standards and were struggling to provide quality education due to a multitude ofinfrastructural, procedural and capacity constraints. A structured improvement plan is currently beingimplemented for maximizing space and capacity utilization of existing assets by an overall revamp ofphysical infrastructure of the schools; sourcing learning aids and resources including enhancedteaching aids, libraries with updated resource material for both students and teachers and improvedequipment for skill /practical labs. The hostel capacity across 4 nursing schools has increased byabout 63 percent allowing for higher number of freshers in-take, i.e. around 100 additionaladmissions in the state. Similarly, a multipronged approach was followed for skill enhancement of thefaculty. In last one year, 62 individuals from the nursing school and nursing division of the directoratehave received training in areas of clinical practice, managerial and facilitation skills and governance. As an outcome, the schools have been able to form 50 percent of the statutory committees and hashelped the Principal as well as the faculty in better planning and delegation of work. As part ofstrengthening governance mechanisms at the DOHFW the project played a pivotal in establishing theNagaland Nursing Council (NNC). Recognising the need to fast track the process of making thenursing council functional, the project has extended support to achieve election of office bearers, office space and furnishings, logo, mission, vision, functions, values, by-laws and regulations.
